HOW WE STARTED

PROSAMI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2009 and headquartered in Virginia. We focus on the promotion of maternal and infant health in the Democratic Republic Of Congo (DRC). PROSAMI establishes adequately equipped and successful maternity clinics and programs.

We provide access to proper prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care. We aim to decrease maternal and infant mortality in the DRC with special focus on midwifery training and allocating equipment. PROSAMI seeks to define and improve the standard of care applicable to the rural context.

Meet our President

The idea was inspired by a tragic life-changing event in the life of PROSAMI founder, Agnes Kanyanya. Her mother died at the age of 40 while giving birth to her baby sister, who spent her first few years in an orphanage together with several other babies who shared the same plight, having also lost their mothers to childbirth complications. Ms. Agnes later removed her little sister from the orphanage and raised her as her own child.

Profoundly affected by that event and realizing the extent of the issue, she was determined to find a solution to reduce the alarmingly high rates of maternal and infant mortality in the DRC and spare other families from such devastating events.
